Art and Action in the Pacific Ocean, curated by Cassandra Coblentz.
Artworks presented at Upwell Art Lab are site-responsive and commission-based projects created by local and international artists who respond to pressing issues in specific oceanic environments. This offers an opportunity to examine our world from multiple scales and perspectives, which in turn presents unique and largely underexplored cultural comparisons, emphasizing that a science of the ocean cannot be severed from history, cultural politics, and communities. The focus will be on art practices that are research-based and offer real and speculative possibilities for change, highlighting awareness and education, but also definitive action. Projects can be developed in collaboration with scientists or conservation organizations, including those already working with AltaSea.
